Youth Environmental Training Institute opportunity – apply now!
The National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) is accepting applications from qualified teens, aged 16–19 from across the country, to attend its 10th annual “Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute”, to be held August 12–21, 2011, in Glorieta, New Mexico for free.
The Institute is an intensive, science-based, residential, and highly educational 10 day program to be held in Northern New Mexico this August. Using classroom and outdoor settings, the Institute is designed to help create the environmental leaders of tomorrow by educating, engaging, and inspiring youth, especially Latinos and other minorities, to a range of environmental, natural resource and energy topics. It is also designed to provide information on the many college and career opportunities in the environment, and to strongly urge students to pursue these careers in the future. Continue Reading »

DEHC Co-Sponsoring Talbot-Norfolk Triangle Park Patrol
Talbot-Norfolk Triangle Park Patrol is another great program at Elmhurst Park this summer, co-sponsored by DEHC. The Park Patrol has two divisions: Junior Park Patrol for ages 12-14, and Park Patrol for ages 14-17.
Park Patrol employs 20+ youth to:
- Volunteer at the Nightingale community garden (to prepare for the 106 Norfolk garden)
- Learn how to champion green spaces
- Mentor youth and promote community greening
Junior Park Patrol employs 6+ youth to:
- Learn how to plant up to 20 spring-flowering trees to provide color along Norfolk Street from Codman Square to New England Ave. Trees are flowering and pink themed, provided by Urban Ecology Institute’s CityRoots program.
The Park Patrol youth will hold a free workshop on tree planting, open to the community, this fall, date TBA.

Nominate young people to attend the World Wide Waldens Youth Leadership Summit, May 20 -21, at Walden Pond in Lincoln, MA. Scholarships are available for the $50 fee. Helen Christou at the Boston Youth Environmental Network has offered to provide transportation if many young people from Boston want to attend. The nomination deadline is April 30. Work with The Food Project – deadline to apply March 19
The Food Project is currently hiring youth ages 14-17 to work 6.5 weeks, Jul 6-Aug 18. Youth earn $200 per week (before taxes), get a t-pass for transportation and also earn a 40 hr volunteer credit to use toward high school graduation requirements.
Hours are 9 AM to 4:30 PM, Mon through Fri, and you must be able to work all 6 and a half weeks. Youth participate in workshops each week, covering issues of diversity awareness, hunger and homelessness, sustainable agriculture, and personal reflection. Deadline: Mar 19.
