Newest activity by DEHC partner Fields Corner Collaborative – they are currently seeking summer interns for My Dot Tour 2011, a multimedia walking tour of Fields Corner’s past, present, and future led by local youth. The tour will need the help of tour guides (ages 14-18) to assist in developing content and choosing tour stops. This is a paid internship, participants will receive a stipend for 10 hours per week from July 5 to August 14. Auditions are at 4 p.m. on June 20 at 1452 Dorchester Avenue, 3rd Floor – Interested? Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) makes the outdoors accessible and meaningful to urban and at-risk youth. YOP operates as a resource center for youth agencies throughout the Northeast, teaching youth workers the skills they need to independently guide their youth outdoors.

FoodCorps: Applications Now Open!

FoodCorps, a new national service program designed to reverse childhood obesity while cultivating a new generation of farmers and public health leaders, is now accepting applications from potential Service Members.

FoodCorps Service Members will spend a year of paid public service building and tending school gardens, developing Farm to School programs and conducting hands-on nutrition education in communities of need.

Environmental Education Showcase Oct. 29

Sign up today for the Boston Environmental Education Showcase!  At this event happening on Friday, Oct. 29, from 5:00 to 7:30pm, at 60 State Street, on the 26th floor, Boston Public School teachers and Boston-based environmental education organizations,  including DEHC, will celebrate the benefits of learning outdoors.
The Boston Youth Environmental Network, in partnership with Boston Public Schools, is hosting its 3rd annual gathering of teachers and environmental education professionals. The event will highlight partnerships between the BPS Science Department and Boston-based environmental programs to promote learning, achievement and environmental stewardship. This is an opportunity to
- Engage with Boston Public School teachers
- See examples of model environmental learning
- Be part of the dialogue around the future of environmental education in Boston

Green & Grow Apprenticeship

The Green & Grow Apprentice Program is a workforce development program that helps young Bostonians become effective and reliable employees through working and learning in an urban park. The program combines job readiness training with career exploration, environmental education, academic support, team-building, personal attention from mentors and attractive compensation. The Green & Grow Apprentice Program runs after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as on Saturdays, for ten months during the school year.

DEHC Co-Sponsoring Talbot-Norfolk Triangle Park Patrol

cherry blossom treeTalbot-Norfolk Triangle Park Patrol is another great program at Elmhurst Park this summer, co-sponsored by DEHC.  The Park Patrol has two divisions: Junior Park Patrol for ages 12-14, and Park Patrol for ages 14-17.

Park Patrol employs 20+ youth to:

  • Volunteer at the Nightingale community garden (to prepare for the 106 Norfolk garden)
  • Learn how to champion green spaces
  • Mentor youth and promote community greening

Junior Park Patrol employs 6+ youth to:

  • Learn how to plant up to 20 spring-flowering trees to provide color along Norfolk Street from Codman Square to New England Ave.  Trees are flowering and pink themed, provided by Urban Ecology Institute’s CityRoots program.

The Park Patrol youth will hold a free workshop on tree planting, open to the community, this fall, date TBA.
