Boston Orchard Program, Free Pruning Workshops

The Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN) is launching the Boston Orchard Program to provide support and education for the care and cultivation of Boston’s fruit trees and orchards located on public land throughout the City of Boston. As part of the Boston Orchard Program, Boston Natural Areas Network is partnering with the Food Project, the Boston Tree Party, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation on two free pruning workshops in March – On Saturday March 5, 2011 as part of the Food Project’s Winter Workshop Series, John Bunker, Pomologist from Super Chilly Farm in Maine will provide pruning tips at the Shirley-Eustis House Orchard located at 33 Shirley Street in Roxbury.

On Saturday March 12, 2011 Ben Crouch, sole proprietor of Jamaica Plain’s Land of Plenty Gardens will provide more information about pruning at the Blake House Orchard located at 735 Columbia Road in Dorchester.

AMC youth opportunity

Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) makes the outdoors accessible and meaningful to urban and at-risk youth. YOP operates as a resource center for youth agencies throughout the Northeast, teaching youth workers the skills they need to independently guide their youth outdoors.

Dot Ave Zoning Initiative begins

The Community Kick-Off of the Dorchester Avenue Zoning Update initiative happened Mar. 9th, 2011. The Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA), in collaboration with the Mayor-appointed Advisory Group, has initiated a zoning update process for Dorchester Avenue. DEHC is part of this process and we are interested in hearing from the community and encourage you to participate. New Partners for Smart Growth 2011 conference: scholarship available

conference scholarship application deadline Jan 10thThe 2011 New Partners for Smart Growth Conference: Building Safe, Healthy and Livable Communities will take place February 3-11 in Charlotte, NC. The conference is offering a diversity scholarship and the deadline to apply has been extended until January 10th, or until all funds are allocated.

The Diversity Scholarship Fund was established to help cover registration fees and travel expenses for minority community leaders and groups whose work is primarily focused on equity and environmental justice issues. To apply, please visit the conference web site.

Additionally, please see this brochure with highlights of the conference sessions and other special events that have a strong focus on equity and environmental justice issues. Along with the equitable development track of sessions, the conference organizers have worked to ensure that these issues are covered in other sessions scheduled throughout the 3-day program. A special daylong pre-conference workshop titled “Achieving Equitable Development” is also scheduled for Wednesday, February 2nd.
